Old-world charm & modern customer service since 1984
Community

Since 1984, City Books has been a home for creativity, discussion, and literature in Pittsburgh. The bookshop features great lighting, a gender-neutral bathroom, free Wi-Fi, and soft jazz. Through ongoing outreach, City Books continues to provide vital resources to the greater Pittsburgh community. Because of our committment to our neighbors, we may require masks at peak transmission times, but they will be provided at the door.
Selection
For 40 years, City Books has offered an exceptional inventory of used and collectible books. We fulfill special orders of new & old books, and custom curation requests to suit all budgets. In addition, we offer a small selection of branded merchandise. Domestic shipping is available for an addition fee. Readers are welcome to take a quick peek or enjoy a long afternoon browse.
Experience

Arlan Hess is the owner of City Books. In addition to managing the bookshop, Hess directs the City Books Writer-in-Residence program for emerging & marginalized writers. She received an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and has attended CABS-Minnesta and the York Antiquarian Book Seminar. She has served on the board of Write Pittsburgh and was a founding member of The Cohort.
Second-hand books are wild books, homeless books; they have come together in vast flocks of variegated feather, and have a charm which the domesticated volumes of the library lack.
